Material Requirements

A)   Material Specification: IBR allowed to use of IS, ASME, ASTM specifications carbon steel boiler quality plates for boilers.

  • IS Specification: IS 2002
  • ASME Specification: SA 516 Gr 60/70, SA 537 Class-1/2/3, etc
  • ASTM Specification: A 516 Gr 60/70, A 537 Class-1/2/3, etc

B)   Steel Making Methods:Steel shall be made from either of the following methods.

  1. Open Hearth
  2. Electric Furnace
  3. Basic oxygen Process
  4. Other methods are also allowed if equivalent steel properties achieved as per requirement.

C)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. All plates above 12 mm shall be supplied in Normalized condition. Plate thk 12 mm & less shall be supplied without normalized subjected that Material specification permit for same.
  2. All plates shall be in fully killed condition.
  3. Semi killed condition plates allowed if all of following conditions are not exceeding.

    1. Upper tensile strength of material shall not be more than 56 Kg/mm2
    2. Maximum thickness of plate shall be 50 mm with design temperature not exceed 0 to 450 Deg.C

D)   Chemical Composition Requirement:If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Carbon content shall be 0.25% (Maximum)
  2. Sulphur content : Maximum 0.05%
  3. Phosphorus content : Maximum 0.05%
  4. Silicon content : Maximum 0.35%
  5. Manganese content : 0.4 to 0.9%
  6. Carbon Equivalent : As per material specification

E)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out per plate.
  2. Bend test: 1 bend test shall be carried out per plate.
  3. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  4. Ultrasonic Testing : As per material specification.
  5. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification.
  6. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

F)   Third Party Inspection:

  1. If Plate supplier is well known steel maker, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & plate supplier.
  2. If Plate supplier is not well known steel maker, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR approved.

G)   Test certificate Requirement:Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IV & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above

B)   Steel Making Methods: Steel shall be made from either of following methods. Other methods are also allowed if equivalent steel properties achieved as per requirement.

  1. Open Hearth
  2. Electric Furnace
  3. Basic oxygen Process

C)   Manufacturing Process: Hot finished OR Cold drawn (Both allowed), but Pipe shall be seamless.

D)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. Cold drawn pipe shall be either Annealed OR Normalized
  2. Hot finished pipe further heat treatment is not required.
  3. All pipes shall be in fully killed condition.

E)   Chemical Composition Requirement:If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Carbon content shall be 0.25 to 0.30 % (Vary as per pipe grade, Refer material specification)
  2. Sulphur content : Maximum 0.035%
  3. Phosphorus content : Maximum 0.035%
  4. Silicon content : Minimum 0.10%
  5. Manganese content : 0.27 to 1.06% (Vary as per pipe grade, Refer material specification)
  6. Carbon Equivalent : As per material specification

F)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out for pipe ( Min. 2 Pipes from 1st 100 pipes, then after 1pipe per 100 pipes)
  2. Bend test:
    • For Pipe outside diameter >60.3 mm: 1 bend test shall be carried out
    • For Pipe outside diameter >= 254 mm: 1 bend test may be carried out instead of flatting test
    • For Pipe outside diameter > 635 mm & Diameter / thk ratio < 7.0 : 1 bend test shall be carried out instead of flatting test
  3. Flattening Test : For Pipe outside diameter <=60.3 mm: 1 flattening test shall be carried out
  4. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  5. Ultrasonic / Eddy current Testing : As per material specification
  6. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification
  7. Hydrotest : Each pipe shall be hydrotested at 1.5 times design pressure. Hydrotest may be waived off if Ultrasonic / Eddy current test has been carried out.
  8. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

G)   Third Party Inspection :

  1. If pipe supplier is well known pipe maker, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & pipe supplier.
  2. If pipe supplier is not well known pipe maker, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR Impact.

H)   Test certificate Requirement: Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IIID & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above.

  • ASME Specification: SA 179, SA 192, SA 334 Gr.1,3,6, etc
  • ASTM Specification: A 179, A 192, A 334 Gr.1,3,6, etc

B)   Steel Making Methods: Steel shall be made from either of following methods. Other methods are also allowed if equivalent steel properties achieved as per requirement.

  1. Open Hearth
  2. Electric Furnace
  3. Basic oxygen Process

C)   Manufacturing Process:Hot finished OR Cold drawn (Both allowed).

D)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. Cold drawn tube shall be either Annealed OR Normalized
  2. Hot finished tube further heat treatment is not required
  3. All tubes shall be in fully killed condition.

E)   Chemical Composition Requirement:If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Carbon content shall be 0.06 to 0.30 % (Vary as per tube grade, Refer material specification)
  2. Sulphur content : Maximum 0.035%
  3. Phosphorus content : Maximum 0.035%
  4. Silicon content : 0.10% to 0.25%
  5. Manganese content : 0.27 to 1.06% (Vary as per tube grade, Refer material specification)
  6. Carbon Equivalent : As per material specification

F)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out for tube ( Min. 2 tube from 1st 100 tubes, then after 1 tube per 100 tubes)
  2. Flattening Test : 1 flattening test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 39.
  3. Flaring OR Expanding Test : 1 flaring test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 40.
  4. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  5. Ultrasonic / Eddy current Testing : As per material specification
  6. Hardness Requirement : 1 Hardness test shall be carried out for tube.
  7. Hydrotest : Each tube shall be hydrotested at 1.5 times design pressure but min. Hydrotest pressure shall be 1.0 Kg/mm2. Hydrotest may be waived off if Ultrasonic / Eddy current test has been carried out.
  8. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

G)   Third Party Inspection:

  1. If tube supplier is well known tube maker, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & tube supplier.
  2. If tube supplier is not well known tube maker, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR approved.

H)   Test certificate Requirement: Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IIIB & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above.

  • ASME Specification: SA 178 etc
  • ASTM Specification: A 178, etc

B)   Steel Making Methods: Steel shall be made from either of following methods.

  1. Open Hearth
  2. Electric Furnace
  3. Basic oxygen Process

C)   Manufacturing Process: Cold drawn & Tube shall be made by Electric resistance welding (ERW).

D)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. Cold drawn tubes shall be either Annealed OR Normalized.
  2. All tubes upto 400 deg.C shall be in semi / fully killed condition, But above 400 deg. C tubes shall be fully killed condition.

E)   Chemical Composition Requirement:If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Carbon content shall be 0.12 to 0.18% (Vary as per tube grade, Refer material specification)
  2. Sulphur content : Maximum 0.035%
  3. Phosphorus content : Maximum 0.035%
  4. Silicon content : 0.10% to 0.35%
  5. Manganese content : 0.30 to 1.20% (Vary as per tube grade, Refer material specification)
  6. Carbon Equivalent : As per material specification

F)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out for tube ( Min. 2 tubes from 1st 100 tubes, then after 1 tube per 100 tubes)
  2. Flattening Test : 1 flattening test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 59(a).
  3. Flaring OR Expanding Test : 1 flaring test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 59(b).
  4. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  5. Ultrasonic / Eddy current Testing : As per material specification
  6. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification
  7. Hydrotest : Each tube shall be hydrotested at 1.5 times design pressure but min. Hydrotest pressure shall be 1.0 Kg/mm2. Hydrotest may be waived off if Ultrasonic / Eddy current test has been carried out.
  8. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

G)   Third Party Inspection:

  1. If tube supplier is well known tube maker, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & tube supplier.
  2. If tube supplier is not well known tube maker, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR approved.

H)   Test certificate Requirement: Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IIIB & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above.

B)   Steel Making Methods: Steel shall be made from either of following methods. Other methods are also allowed if equivalent steel properties achieved as per requirement.

  1. Open Hearth
  2. Electric Furnace
  3. Basic oxygen Process

C)   Manufacturing Process:Forging method.

D)   Heat Treatment Condition:Forging component shall be heat treated if required by selected material specification OR required by client.

E)   Chemical Composition Requirement:If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Carbon content : As per material specification
  2. Sulphur content : Maximum 0.05%
  3. Phosphorus content : Maximum 0.05%
  4. Silicon content : As per material specification
  5. Manganese content : As per material specification
  6. Carbon Equivalent : As per material specification

F)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out per heat no. & Tensile test requirement shall be as per IBR Regulation no. 83.
  2. Bend Test : 1 bend test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 84.
  3. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  4. Ultrasonic Testing : As per material specification
  5. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification
  6. Hydrotest : Not Required
  7. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

G)   Third Party Inspection:

  1. If forging supplier is well known forger, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & forging supplier.
  2. If forging supplier is not well known forger, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR approved.

H)  Test certificate Requirement: Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IIIG & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above.

  1. Carbon content : As per material specification
  2. Sulphur content : Maximum 0.05%
  3. Phosphorus content : Maximum 0.05%
  4. Silicon content : As per material specification
  5. Manganese content : As per material specification
  6. Carbon Equivalent : As per material specification

F)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out per heat no. & Tensile test requirement shall be as per IBR Regulation no. 240 (b) & (c ).
  2. Bend Test : 1 bend test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 240 (d) & (e).
  3. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  4. Ultrasonic Testing : As per material specification
  5. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification
  6. Hydrotest : Not Required
  7. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

G)   Third Party Inspection:

  1. If forging supplier is well known forger, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & forging supplier.

B)   Steel Making Methods: Steel shall be made from either of following methods.

  1. Open Hearth
  2. Electric Furnace
  3. Basic oxygen Process

C)   Manufacturing Process:Hot finished OR Cold drawn (Both allowed), but Pipe shall be seamless.

D)   Application limit:

  1. Grade T2 is allowed upto 537 Deg. C Design Temperature
  2. Other grades allowed upto 648 Deg. C Design Temperature

E)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. All pipe grades except grade T91 shall either full / Isothermal Annealed OR Normalized & Tempered condition. (Min. Normalized & tempering temperature shall be 650 Deg.C for Grade T2/T11/12 & 675 Deg. C for Grade T5/T9/T22).
  2. Pipe of Grade T91 shall be normalized at 1040 Deg. C & tempered at 730 Deg. C as min.
  3. All pipes shall be in fully killed condition.

F)   Chemical Composition Requirement:If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out for pipe (IBR Regulation No. 54) ( Min. 2 Pipes from 1st 100 pipes, then after 1pipe per 100 pipes)
  2. Bend test:
    • For Pipe outside diameter <=60.3 mm: 1 bend test shall be carried out
    • For Pipe outside diameter >= 254 mm: 1 bend test may be carried out instead of flatting test
    • For Pipe outside diameter > 635 mm & Diameter / thk ratio < 7.0 : 1 bend test shall be carried out instead of flatting test
  3. Flattening Test : For Pipe outside diameter >60.3 mm. 1 flattening test shall be carried out

  1. Grade T2 is allowed upto 538 Deg. C Design Temperature
  2. Other grades allowed upto 649 Deg. C Design Temperature

E)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. All tube grades except grade T91 shall either full / Isothermal Annealed OR Normalized & Tempered condition. (Min. Normalized & tempering temperature shall be 650 Deg.C for Grade T2/T11/12 & 675 Deg. C for Grade T5/T9/T22).
  2. Tube of grade T91 shall be normalized at 1040 Deg. C & tempered at 730 Deg. C as min.
  3. All tubes shall be in fully killed condition.

  4. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  5. Ultrasonic / Eddy current Testing : As per material specification
  6. Hardness Requirement: As per material specification
  7. Hydrotest : Each tube shall be hydrotested at 1.5 times design pressure but min. Hydrotest pressure shall be 1.0 Kg/mm2. Hydrotest may be waived off if Ultrasonic / Eddy current test has been carried out
  8. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

E)   Heat Treatment Condition:

  1. All tube grades except H grade (304H, 316H, 321H, 347H) either Annealed condition (Annealed Temperature 1040 Deg. C Then rapid water quench)
  2. Tube of H grade shall be as below,
    • Cold Rolled: a) 321H, 347H: 1100 Deg. C   b) 304H, 3316H: 1040 Deg. C Then rapid water quench
    • Hot Rolled: a) 321H, 347H: 1050 Deg. C   b) 304H, 3316H: 1040 Deg. C Then rapid water quench
  3. All tubes shall be in fully killed condition.

  3. Flaring OR Expanding Test: 1 flaring test shall be carried out as per IBR Regulation 48(c).
  4. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  5. Ultrasonic / Eddy current Testing : As per material specification
  6. Hardness Requirement: As per material specification
  7. Hydrotest : Each tube shall be hydrotested at 1.5 times design pressure but min. Hydrotest pressure shall be 1.0 Kg/mm2. Hydrotest may be waived off if Ultrasonic / Eddy current test has been carried out
  8. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

  2. If tube supplier is not well known tube maker, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR approved.

I)   Test certificate Requirement Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IIIB & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above.

A) Material Specification: IBR allowed to ues of IS, ASME, ASTM specification copper plates.
ASME Specification: SB 152

B)   Process:

  1. Plate shall be fire refined OR Electrolytic.
  2. Plate shall be hot rolled & free crackes

C)   Heat Treatment Condition:All plates shall be Annealed heat treated condition.

D)   Chemical Composition Requirement: If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Copper content shall be 99.2 % (min.)
  2. Arsenic content : 0.30 – 0.50 %
  3. Antimony content : Maximum 0.05%
  4. Bismuth content : Maximum 0.05%
  5. Oxygen content : Maximum 0.10%

E)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: 1 tensile test shall be carried out per plate. (IBR Regulation No. 33(e))
  2. Bend test:
    • 1 hot bend test shall be carried out per plate at 650 to 850 Deg.C.
    • 1 cold bend test shall be carried out per plate
  3. Ultrasonic Testing : N/A
  4. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification
  5. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification.

F)   Third Party Inspection:

  1. If plate supplier is well known steel maker, then third party inspection not required. If client requires, third party inspection can be carried out as per agreement between client & plate supplier.
  2. If Plate supplier is not well known steel maker, then third party inspection is required as per IBR, Also third party shall be IBR approved.

G)   Test certificate Requirement: Material manufacturer shall issue IBR Form-IV & shall be duly signed by third party inspector as per above.

A) Material Specification: IBR allowed to use of IS, ASME, ASTM specification Copper Tubes.
ASME Specification: SB 111 UNS No. C10100, C10200, C10300, C10800, C12000, C12200, C14200

B)   Process:

  1. Tube shall be fire refined OR Electrolytic.
  2. Tubes shall made from either Hot drawing OR Cold drawing, But finishing shall be done with cold drawing method only.

C)   Heat Treatment Condition:All tubes shall be Annealed heat treated condition.

D)   Chemical Composition Requirement:
If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Copper content shall be 99.2 % (min.)

  5. Bulging OR Drifting (Expansion) Test : 1 drifting cold test shall be carried out for tube as per IBR Regulation 35(1)(f)
  6. Impact test: As per material specification OR Design requirement.
  7. Eddy current Testing : As per material specification
  8. Hardness Requirement : As per material specification
  9. Hydrotest : Each tube shall be hydrotested at 750 PSI or Specified in Material specification whichever is higher.
  10. Other requirements shall be as per Material specification

  2. Tubes shall made from either Hot drawing OR Cold drawing, But finishing shall be done with cold drawing method only.

C)   Heat Treatment Condition:All tubes shall be Annealed heat treated condition

D)   Chemical Composition Requirement:
If material specification requirement is more stringent than below requirements, then the same shall be followed.

  1. Copper content shall be 70-73 % (min.)
  2. Zinc content : 25-30 %
  3. Other content : 0.75% (As per material specification)

E)   Testing Requirement:

  1. Tensile test: Not required as per IBR. However, shall be checked as per Material Specification.
  2. Flattening Test : 1 flattening test shall be carried out for tube as per IBR Regulation 35(1)(h)
  3. Doubling Test : 1 doubling test shall be carried out after completion of flattening for tube as per IBR Regulation 35(1)(h)
  4. Flanging Test : 1 cold flanging test shall be carried out for tube as per IBR Regulation 35(1)(g)
